Should tree cuts or wounds be treated or painted?

Laurel Oaks are susceptible to many issues but the most common is old age. According to the University of Florida extension service Laurel Oaks have a lifespan of 50-70 years. Many of the Laurels here in the bay area are approaching that age and are beginning to rot. Once they rot on the inside, they become a hazard to the surrounding area.
